The type of reels you prefer to use will also determine the type of fishing rods you need. If your choice reel is a casting reel, then you will need a casting rod. If you are going to use a spinning reel, then you will need to have a spinning rod. The significance here is that the reel seat is on the underside of the rod and likewise with the ferrules or line guides. Maybe fly fishing is your favorite, then a good fly fishing rod is going to be needed. Rods made of bamboo make good fly rods. Fly rods are also chosen according to the weight of the line that you want to use. A fly rod with a smaller number such as three will only throw a very light fly and cast a short distance. One with a higher number assignment, such as an 11, will throw a much heavier fly and cast further.
Now that you know that the core of custom rod-building is the unique selection, customization, design, quality, comfort, aesthetics, performance, and assembly of components into a finished angling "system-of-systems, lets discuss "cost." A common myth is that a "more expensive fishing rod means its better." This statement is disproved with every anglers design that a custom rod builder creates, at reasonable prices compared to similar competitors or the misleading quality of the mass-produced "off-the-shelf variant." Custom builders provide competitive cost advantages by building their fishing rods "one at a time," rendering obsolete the need for exhaustive inventory, labor costs, and material waste. This permits excess capital for the use of top quality components and materials. Additionally, custom builders routinely do not require capital investment and expenditure for overhead business expenses such as: advertising, showrooms, galleries, etc. Another advantage of "one at a time" builds is that high-end components equate to non-corrosive, scratch resistant, and a more durable final product thereby eliminating the need for reinforcing materials, additional assembly processes, and warranty repair.
Ultimately, choice is a personal decision, but knowing how to make selections can save you money even if you spend more than you originally planned. This is simply because if you dont get what will do the job right or dont get a quality product, youll just have to make another purchase a lot sooner. The casual angler will probably get along just fine with production fishing rods. The more serious the angler becomes about the art and sport of fishing, the more demanding and targeted his or her needs become in terms of equipment and performance. The serious angler will appreciate the benefits of a custom-crafted-rod for its optimum performance, targeted action for specific needs, superior construction, durability, and aesthetic appeal. These are the reasons many have become custom builders and the reasons why their products are becoming more and more popular. In my humble opinion, as an avid angler, there is no better choice of equipment than that of a custom fishing rod. Heres simple rationale on why to choose custom versus the OTS, mass-produced fishing rod:
Choose a fishing rod that is "right-sized" for you - too heavy and youll be miserable on the water and sore the next day... too light and youll never get the results youre seeking (casting distance, accuracy, hook set leverage, control for fighting and landing the fish, etc.). Be prepared to have several Alabama Rig fishing rods on the deck of your boat - there is no panacea rig or A-rig rod that will work in every situation. A good rule of thumb is to plan for a heavier rig and rod set-up for deeper water/heavier lure presentations and one that is downsized for shallow water presentations. Invest in the "right-sized, right-performance" fishing equipment and tackle... youre fishing a fishing lure that costs upwards of $30 dollars, with braided line that will cost $30-40 dollars a spool, using an expensive spinning or bait-casting reel (maybe hundreds of dollars?)... so invest in the best performance fishing rod possible... and that will most likely be the fishing rod option that provides you the most confidence.
