A fishing rod is the heart of your tackle. There is an unlimited number of fishing rods to choose from but there are ways to narrow down the selection without having that overwhelming feeling of-where do I begin? Having the right rods for your style of fishing will be sure to increase the success of your outings. The frequency in which you fish, what species of fish you are fishing for and the environment you are fishing in, all play important roles in choosing the proper rods. There are multi section rods or collapsible rods, telescoping rods and single piece rods. If you fish on a regular basis and normally close to home, then single piece fishing rods will normally be your best choice. Single piece rods are normally more sensitive and more durable then the others. If you have to travel further to fish and you cant easily fit a single piece rod in your vehicle, then a multi piece or telescoping rods may be your best choice. Although, these types of rods arent as sensitive as a single piece rod. Multi piece rods may also be a good choice for the beginner or one who doesnt fish often. These fishing rods are easier to transport and as a beginner, the sensitivity may not be as much of a factor as it would be to the seasoned angler.
Medium action rods are good for general purpose and will develop a slower more comfortable style of casting. Because the action generates power over the top half of the rod it follows that the cast will have a deeper loop to it, giving more control over matters. It will keep the leader and flies away from the lower part of the line as it is being cast, so things arent as likely to get all tangled up mid cast. This is a much easier and more comfortable fishing style and I would recommend it for the beginner. Finally, slow or progressive action rods develop their power over nearly the entire length of the rod. This makes for a very slow and lazy cast which cannot be hurried. This will suit short distance fishing with a floating line, where accuracy is more important than distance. They are ideal for the small trout stream where presentation to a feeding fish is all about accuracy and stealth and you are doing little more than laying the line onto the water.
Any angler serious about catching fish and who routinely invests hard-earned money (entry fees, travel expenses, maintenance, tackle, equipment, etc.) cannot afford to purchase fishing rods that are anything but the best. After all, when you are on the water, executing everything within your power to fill the live well, then it is paramount to take advantage of any opportunity available (i.e., control what you can). So, it only makes sense to leverage the very best technology and craftsmanship for your primary equipment, your fishing rod. Another advantage of not working at a large company, is that a custom builder is actually assembling and crafting your and only your custom fishing rod. So, in this example, focus does equate to quality of construction. Unlike the factory product, the custom option is built to accommodate your requirements and desires.
The good news, smaller manufacturing companies, called custom rod builders exist. While many of these custom builders have the skill and talent to custom tailor to an anglers requirements, large manufacturers often lack the "attention to detail" to truly design and fabricate a fishing rod that is balanced, tuned, and ultimately the very best sport-fishing tool for the angler, leveraging the very best components, and at the "right" price. This simple fact in and of itself is the defining difference between a custom and a production fishing rod; the difference is ultimately the performance characteristics of the final product. Lets come back to this after weve identified exactly what a custom builder "is" and "does."
