Most fly line manufacturers recommend cleaning of the fly line. There is no better time to do this than during the winter, just before to start of the fly fishing season. Make no mistake about it, cleaning a fly fishing line is a tedious task, but if you have ever cast your dirty line, then cleaned it and gave it another go, you would be convinced that this can improve your casting abilities. You may be asking yourself how your line gets dirty, after all your constantly putting it in water. Any number of factors both natural and manmade can increase the friction through the guides and reduce the ability of your line to float on the water. Some of these factors include fishing in cloudy/ dirty water, prolonged exposure to heat, exposure to bug spray or sun screen just to name a few. Not to mention the fact that these factors and many more also increase the chances of a tangled line just when you need it most.
Tip: at the end of each season spool your salmon fishing line onto another vacant spool (preferably something large) using an electric drill to do the work if you dont have a winder. This will help the line with "memory" so that its not all coiled up and easy to work with for the next season. Also if you do this you can usually get another season out of your line because when you spool it back onto your reel, it will be going on backwards. In other words, the line youll be using will probably be untouched line that was always spooled up on the reel and never cast or run!
Monofilament-- This line is softer than the other two, which makes it more manageable. It does retain water which makes it more likely to float. Mono line is not that durable. So, if your fishing around a lot of cover or anything that would be rubbing your line, mono might not be the best choice. It does come in different colors and mono is harder to see in the water than braided line. Mono has a lot of stretch to it. So when the fish strikes, the line will absorb some of the strike, there will be a little delay before you fill the fish. This can help when it comes to setting the hook. Many people set the hook to soon and jerk the lure right out of the fishes mouth. The mono line gives the fish just a little bit longer to swallow your bait. Mono works good for finesse baits and crankbaits.
Determining What Line To Use. Which type of salmon fishing line you use on your fishing trip will often mean the difference between a successful day and one filled with a lot of snags, rats-nests and frustration. The right salmon fishing line will often be determined by the type of salmon you are going to be targeting during the day; there are specialty lines designed specifically for certain types of fishing conditions, and even standard lines will have varying results depending on the water you are fishing in.
